Anything for Selena's - Honoring the Legendary Selena Quintanilla

Posted by CATHYA LOPEZ

SELENA QUINTANILLA PEREZ 1971-1995

Today, Tuesday March 31st marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of legendary Selena Quintanilla-Perez. To this day she continues to live on in the hearts & souls of so many fans, loved ones, and people who live through her music. Selena Quintanilla Perez was born on April 16, 1971 in the town of Lake Jackson in Texas. The youngest of three Selena had the special gift of vocals and began developing her craft at the tender age of six. Once Selena and Los Dinos was established with Selena as Vocalist, her sister Suzette on the drums, and brother Abraham on the Bass they began their life on the road often traveling to play at different small venues across the country and within their community (restaurants, events, fairs, radio events).
Mexican-American Selena did not learn how to speak Spanish until she recorded her 1st record in 1984. Her family agreed with her when it came to the importance of speaking the language of her heritage and it worked wonders for her career! Once she began practicing the language she began writing ballads and dance songs in Spanish and placed a huge emphasis in breaking through the Tejano genre. Three years later Selena won Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards, and it did not stop there - for 8 consecutive years she won multiple awards dominating the entire industry! Her 1st (1989) and 2nd (1990) albums peaked on the US Billboard charts and she went on to slowly climb the US music charts with hits like "Baila Esta Cumbia". A couple years later Selena and her lead guitarist for Los Dinos, Chris Perez got married. That same year she released her breakthrough album titled "Entre a Mi Mundo" which peaked at #1 on the US Billboard music charts for over eight consecutive months, was certified 6 times Platinum in the US, and certified Gold in Mexico. As the years progressed Selena kept climbing the music charts and dominating the Tejano Music scene.
In 1994 she launched Selena etc., a clothing line that she personally curated & designed with a team of costureras. She launched two boutiques in Texas and was a successful, multi-talented artist to the full extent of the word. That same year she released "Amor Prohibido", her 4th album that ended up debuting at #3 on the US Billboard Top Latin Album chart and #1 on the Regional Mexican album charts, and eventually became one of the best-selling Latin albums in the United States. The album had four #1 singles: Amor Prohibido, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, No Me Queda Más", and Fotos Y Recuerdos. The album was certified double Platinum and was among the best selling US albums of 1995.
On February 26, 1995 Selena performed her last concert at the Houston Astrodome in front of more than 61,000 excited fans. It held the record for the largest crowd in the history of the Houston Astrodome until April 2001.
At the young age of 23, just when Selena's career was beginning to reach its pinnacle on March 31st, 1995 Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her Official Fan Club and Manager of her Selena etc. boutiques. Her death shocked the Latino community and many people where saddened and demanded answers! People Magazine released a Selena special Commemorative  issue shortly after her death which sold over a million copies, and eventually led People to create People en Español. In October 1995 a Houston jury convicted Yolanda Saldívar of 1st degree murder for taking the life of Selena and condemned her with a life sentence.
Selena is considered the Queen of Tejano and continues to live in the hearts of many today. She has influenced and touched the hearts of so many and her music lives on forever. Her vibrant smile, lovely music, and warm heart live on as well. On behalf of Casa De Gitanas I want to personally send some love to Selena's spirit/soul.. Your gift of music, passion, and love has touched the world like no other. Your presence on this earth was meaningful and a gift to us all. Your light continues to shine, and you made the world a better place by being YOU, entirely. Por siempre Selena!

Feel Good Now! Self-Care Routine to Revitalize & Regenerate from the inside and out

There's all kinds of momentum going on so it's necessary to take time to nurture you & your human vessel. First & Foremost THANK YOU for tuning into our lovely Gitana blog where we get to share and connect with you goddesses! Today, on Friday the 13th aka the day of the goddess we wanted to give back and share a couple of our beauty and overall wellness secrets in order to help you unwind, relax, and connect with the inner goddess inside of you. It is SO easy to get stuck into the routine of running back and forth, juggling a billion things at a time, and it's hard sometimes to sneak in a little moment for us. It is so important for us to nurture our human vessel who is always working magically to keep us alive -- that is why we believe in magic really! We are ALL so blessed and magical in every single way and so we recommend that this weekend you treat yourself with the most love and attention. You are loved & supported xo

Start off with setting an intention, something that resonates with you. It can be whatever you want :) Some examples are "I am grateful for my human vessel", "Thank You for blessing me with so much love and appreciation" or "Thank You for this moment".

Now here's the goodies we promised - enjoy!

Revitalizing Green Goddess Juice

This juice right here is the absolute best full body quencher! We totally recommend juicing using fresh, *organic (or consciously purchased w/o added pesticides) natural fruits & veggies. You can go to your local farmers market and pick up some fresh ingredients to juice and get to work! If you plant your own fruits and vegetables that is EVEN better! We have a lemon tree, oranges, and some mint alway so we have an abundance of ingredients -- totally recommend it. For this recipe you will need ginger, lemon, cucumber, and apples.

Like watermelon, cucumbers are made up of mostly (95 percent) water, which means eating them on a hot summer day can help you stay hydrated. Cucumbers are rich in two of the most basic elements needed for healthy digestion: water and fiber. When you drink fresh-made green juice, it is almost like receiving an intravenous infusion of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes because they go straight into your system without having to be broken down. When your body has an abundance of the nutrients it needs, and your pH is optimally balanced, you will feel energized and your immune system will get a boost.

Apples are one of the most pesticide-contaminated foods in the produce section, so it’s best to buy them organic. When you take a look at everything apples have to offer, it explains why it’s called a “super food.” Apples have been mentioned in folktales handed down through the ages, and not just because of their crunchy goodness. They’re extremely versatile in recipes, both raw and cooked, and offer cancer-fighting properties and powerful antioxidants with every bite. What could be better than that?

Haven’t been feeling hungry? Eat fresh ginger just before lunch to stoke a dull appetite and fire up the digestive juices. Also, Ginger improves the absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients in the body. When you are getting over a cold ginger is also an awesome aid -- since it clears the "microcirculatory channels" of the body, including the pesky sinuses that tends to act up from time to time. Clear your sinuses while also enjoying your tasty green juice!

DNA cell protection, immune system regulation, and inflammation relief are just a few of the many nutritional advantages offered by lemons. Who doesn't like lemonade, and the bright, fresh flavor lemons add to so many dishes? As for the vitamins and minerals, lemons come with infection-fighting vitamin C, as well as thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, iron, and magnesium, fiber, lots of B vitamins, calcium, potassium, copper, folate, and potassium. The pungent taste of Lemon is the perfect addition to this energetic, refreshing green juice! Yum!

Green Goddess Juice Recipe:

1 large cucumber

1 slice of ginger

1 lemon (peeled)

2 apples

Rinse your fruits & veggies in water, chop your ginger slice, and slice your apples into smaller pieces and toss into your juicer. Grab a cup or a large mason jar and toss some ice in it, mix your fresh juice around and pour it over ice. Grab a straw and enjoy! Feel like the goddess you truly are as your refresh and rejuvenate from the inside & out.

Our lovely sister Bri mentors a group of young entrepreneurs in the BUILD program that manufacture and sell SIMPLE BLISS Organic Body Scrubs made with the finest and most natural ingredients. This small business is local and ran by a group of high-school girls -  making great entrepreneurial strides already! We are so proud of our sister Briceyda and the Simple Bliss team for making their wildest dreams come true and for all they have accomplished as a team. I used their Geranium Rose Body Scrub during my bath and absolutely loved the smell of it and how it made my skin shine after! This product makes your legs nice and polished along with making your skin feel refreshed. Your body's largest organ is your skin and is the barrier to all of the outside elements. The lotion that you put on your skin has to work its way through layers of dead skin cells just to reach the top layer. No matter how much body lotion you put on the dead skin cells, they still remain dead skin cells. If you want healthy smooth skin, you must gently scrub them off. No better way to take advantage than in the shower or bath with a body scrub made out of organic, skin safe ingredients. This product helps your skin feel soft, smooth, and revitalized and is another wonderful way to treat yourself.

Follow Simple Bliss & try out this wonderful product for yourself -- Email your order in!

The best beauty secret of them all is the following! If you suffer from skin issues or if you simply need something to refreshen & cleanse your skin we recommend Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay 100% Natural Clay mixed with Apple Cider Vinegar to create a cleansing mask. Clays have been used for centuries to beautify and refresh when used as a facial mask. Cleopatra used clay from the Nile River & Arabian desert over 1800 years ago as part as her beauty ritual. Aztec Secret Indian Healing is made out of bentonite clay from the Death Valley in California where it is dried by the sun for up to 6+ months in temperatures that reach almost 134 degrees.

How does a clay mask help your skin? Well, when a facial or clay mask is applied to the skin it forms a negative charge. Poisons and toxins stored in the epidermis have a positive charge - Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay lifts the pimple and blackheads into the clay bed to cause accelerated healing and nourishment to the skin with over 50 minerals. 100% NATURAL.

The Apple Cider Vinegar Brief Breakdown

With a pH similar to skin, Apple Cider Vinegar helps restore and balance your skin’s pH and acid levels. The acid mantle is the combination of sebum (oil) and perspiration on the skin’s surface. This barrier protects the skin and makes it less vulnerable to environmental damage (smog, sun and wind), less prone to dehydration, and also inhibits the growth of foreign bacteria and fungi (enabling skin to be healthier and have fewer breakout and blemishes. Acne, allergies and other skin problems become more severe as the skin becomes more alkaline).”Mild” soaps are often alkaline (pH 9.5-11), and remove the natural acid protection as well as extract protective lipids (fats) from the skin. Washing with soap can increase this alkaline state and make the skin even more vulnerable to irritation and infection. Most people are cleansing with products that are breaking down their acid mantle and causing increased skin issues. Balancing your pH is an imperative part of maintaining healthy skin.

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Support a healthy immune system
  • Helps control weight
  • Promotes digestion & pH balance
  • Helps soothe dry throats
  • Helps remove body sludge toxins
  • Helps maintain healthy skin
  • Helps promote youthful, healthy bodies
  • Soothes irritated skin
  • Relieves muscle pain from exercise
  • Ancient Aztec Beauty Secret: Indian Healing Clay Mask

Mix a spoonful of Indian Healing Clay with two spoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in a mixing bowl. Mix the two ingredients around and let it sit for a couple seconds as it fizzles. With a clean makeup brush, evenly apply the mixture onto your face once the bubbling stops. Feel free to put on a couple layers of the mixture and let it dry for about 10 minutes, in the meantime you can sip your Green Goddess Juice and relax. Once the mask is completely dry on your face rinse it off with warm water. Gently rub your face to help the clay come off and once its completely gone grab a towel and pat dry your face. Use your favorite moisturizer or dab some all natural coconut oil onto your face to have it glow! This beauty secret really is the best and leaves you feeling like a glowing goddess!

Allow yourself to receive your blessings & make yourself feel wonderful.

Meditate. Let things go. Feel good now.

Give thanks, appreciate all that your body does for you.

Hope you enjoyed goddess! Wishing you nothing but love, happiness, and abundance.

    With love & intention,

This Monday Casa De Gitanas had the sweet pleasure of collaborating on a very special project with Rose Hill, CEO & Founder of Academy of Cosmetic Arts, muse Carmen Milagro, and photographer/creative director Eddie Cotillon. Casa De Gitanas had the lovely opportunity to style & shoot some beautiful pieces from our collection that where especially curated for the event. Upon arrival the vibe was magical, everybody in the room came from different walks of life and it was by sheer coincidence that we all came into each others lives to create magic on this beautiful evening!
Rose Hill is a creative genius, and a very sweet, multi-talented female entrepreneur from the Silicon Valley. She was born in Stanford and has roots in Hawaii, and has over 30+ years of experience in the makeup industry.
She has done makeup for a variety of big name celebrities like Al Gore & Bill Clinton, has led and represented makeup crews for various Fashion Week's and has also worked her magic on many Silicon Valley executives.
Rose not only is the mastermind behind her own company Rose Hill and Crew she is also very hands-on with the prestigious Academy of Cosmetic Arts which she also founded. A true expert in her field, and overall professional Rose was definitely a pleasure to work with.
The mastermind behind the lens was the incredibly talented Eddie Cotillon who's effortless directing and photographing style helped keep the overall pace of the shoot nice & smooth. Eddie know's exactly what kind of shot he is going for and does a fantastic job at not only directing the models, but also making them feel comfortable. Eddie is a very experienced Creative Show and Special Events Director as well as an Established Published Fashion and Commercial Photographer with a kind spirit, and a warm smile. He has previously worked on projects with YSL Paris, Ralph Lauren, USA ELLE Magazine, NY Fashion Week, and Weddingfaire Fashion Show's to name a few and will soon be working on a local fashion show which is featuring Vera Wang's Spring/Summer 2015 Collection.
Nuestra gran amiga Carmen Milagro was the perfect muse' of the evening with her beautiful almond eyes being the main attraction. Carmen is such a lovely person to collaborate with because she is so willing and open to trying new things! It was lovely to see her bedazzled in Casa De Gitanas jewelry which totally matches her overall gitana style. There is more to this dynamic beauty than just a pretty face - Carmen is the Founder & CEO of WAAAHOO Productions, a Music, Design and Organizational company based out of San Francisco, California and also the Creator & "Head Nut" for Peanut Butter & JAMMusic Sessions for Kids. Regardless of what other projects she is working on she always stays committed to her main labour of love, music. Carmen is also the best advice giver, some of the best lessons I've learned from Carmen is 1) stay true to yourself, 2) trust your gut feeling, 3) and to be bold and savvy in the way you approach life. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Carmen on another lovely project.
All in all this evening was full of magic, talented individuals, beautiful models in exquisite makeup, and everyone that was there was lucky to witness the magia! For all of you who didn't get to experience it firsthand stay tuned for the official photoshoot pictures captured by the ever so talented Eddie. Las Gitanas y William B Glass -- A collaboration of craftsmanship & love

Ladies & Gents, first and foremost Happy Holidays! Hope Christmas has you in high spirits and that you are gearing up for 2015 - The Year of Action. Today we'd like to introduce you to our friend, the talented man behind the torch, William Brown founder & creator of William B Glass.

We where first introduced to Will from our very own Marie who recounts the story of how the two met -- Enjoy!

"Upon first glance I was drawn to William's booth due to his wide array of one of a kind glass pendants, goblins, and intricate glasswork. After conversing for a while I discovered that his interest in glasswork began during high-school shortly after doing an apprenticeship as a tattoo artist.

I was extremely fascinated by his amazing talent and craftsmanship and ultimately very impressed by this creative, humble, artistic entrepreneur. A couple days later I was given the opportunity to pay William's studio a visit. As soon as I entered the room I was wowed by the tall, iconic California Redwood trees that adorned the natural outdoor landscape. I especially  loved the Graffiti that was spread from wall-to-wall not to mention William's very own vintage pinball machine collection that definitely gave me a touch of nostalgia. That same day I received my first opportunity to blow glass! Even though I was extremely eager to learn I must also admit that it is far more complicated than it seems.

After a couple of hours of twists and pulls my hands got extremely sore, glassblowing definitely requires lots of patience, hardwork and creativity. The process of making pendants is very intricate “incasing opals and placing them into glasswork is super laborious but totally worth its beauty" says Will.

Casa De Gitanas is proud to support other local creatives, and young entrepreneurs like Will. In the near future we plan to commission some pieces from William (including succulent holders) and to continue to collaborate on other amazing projects! We are always forward to creating & curating one of a kind treasures full of love and intention for you to cherish forever! As we gather and collect more memories we hope to transform our life experiences into beautiful products for our customers to treasure.

Make sure to check out William's one of a kind pieces on his Etsy shop & to follow him on Instagram for the latest glasswork auctions happening everyday!

Thank You for rocking with us this year, we're looking forward to bringing you guys lots of goodies for this upcoming year. Stay tuned for more collaborations with dope creatives & entrepreneurs. Sending you all good vibes, love, happiness and prosperity. May this new year bring us lots of energy to tackle all of our goals. xo
